Body Height Estimation Based on Dimensions of Sacral and Coccygeal Vertebrae

Abstract: This study is to evaluate whether it is possible to predict living stature from sacral and coccygeal vertebral dimensions. Individual vertebral body heights, sacral height(SH), and sacrococcygeal height (SCH) were recorded from the magnetic resonance images of 42 adult males. Sum of the heights of five sacral vertebrae (ΣS), the first four coccygeal vertebrae (ΣC), and the total height of the sacral and the first four coccygeal vertebrae together (ΣSC) were also recorded. Linear regression equations for statur… Show more

“…Coccygeal length has been recorded in skeletal material [23] and Korean cadavers [24]. One MRI study recorded the sum total of individual coccygeal vertebral lengths but not the length of the coccyx together with its intervertebral discs [19]. There is a similar paucity of data on coccygeal curvature, which tended to be greater in men in our study.…”

“…The main findings can be summarized as follows. The normal adult coccyx comprises 3-5 segments, 4 being present in most individuals; a greater number of segments has been reported in a few individuals in some studies [19]. Average Table 2 Mean coccygeal, sacral and sacrococcygeal lengths…”

“…Regression formulae with the lowest standard error of the estimate are those using length values of the femur and tibia [9]. Such statistical equations has been devised for the cranium [10,11], scapula [12], vertebra [13,14], metacarpals [15,16], metatarsals [17,18]. Recently, stature estimation from sternal measurements has received more attention [3,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…Najmniejszym błędem standardowym oszacowania są obarczone równania regresji wykorzystujące długość kości udowej oraz piszczeli [9]. Takie równania statystyczne opracowano dla czaszki [10, 11], łopatki [12], kręgosłupa [13,14], śródręcza [15,16] oraz śródstopia [17,18]. W ostatnim czasie zwró-cono większą uwagę na możliwość szacowania wzrostu na podstawie pomiarów mostka [3,[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…Stature can be estimated using various body parts since there is a strong relationship exists between each part of the body and whole body [2][3][4][5][6] . Nothing exemplifies this truth more than the relationship that various parts of the body have to the stature of an individual 7 .…”
