Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism increase plasma irisin levels in rats

Abstract: Background A recently discovered hormone, irisin is accepted to be significantly involved in the regulation of body weight. Thyroid functions may be, directly or indirectly, associated with irisin. Aim The aim of the present study is to determine the effect of experimental thyroid dysfunction on irisin levels in rats. Methods The study registered 40 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, which were allocated to groups as follows: 1. Control; 2. Hypothyroidism induced by injection of 10 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal propy… Show more

“…Atici et al. 27,28 found that irisin levels were increased in rats with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Short-term iatrogenic hypothyroidism was induced by daily intraperitoneal administration of 6-N-propyl-2-thiouracil (10 mg/kg/day) for 3 weeks.…”

“…A meta-analysis of 55,287 participants indicated that SCH is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and mortality in those with higher TSH levels, in particular in those with TSH levels at 10 mIU/L or greater [25]. Some studies have shown that some adipokines or hepatokines, such as Irisin and FGF21 levels, are altered in thyroid dysfunction [14, 26, 27]. Because the associations between Angptl and SCH or CH are not clear, we sought to understand the potential role of Angptl3, 4, and 8 on these diseases.…”

“…However, based on a recently published research that used human subcutaneous white adipocytes, irisin and T3 might have different influences on adiponectin, PPAR-γ, and FNDC5 levels [16]. Animal studies have shown that the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis function may be directly or indirectly related to irisin modulation, or vice versa [17][18][19].…”
