Botrychium matricariifolium, a new fern species for the flora of Montenegro

Abstract: -In this short communication we report a new fern for Montenegro -Botrychium matricariifolium (Döll) A. Braun ex W.D.J. Koch, known as the chamomile grapefern. Up to now, the only Botrychium species in the fl ora of Montenegro was B. lunaria (L.) Sw., a typical species for montane to alpine grasslands and meadows. One individual of B. matricariifolium was found in a forest opening on the mountain Babji zub. B. matricariifolium was accompanied by numerous individuals of B. lunaria. These species are clearly dis… Show more

“…Similarly, only one locality with a single individual has been reported from Montenegro (Stešević & Berg, 2015) and from neighbouring Croatia, where only one Botrychium matricariifolium locality has been confirmed with a population size not exceeding 50 individuals (Borovečki-Voska et al, 2011). “…The southernmost localities of the species are located in Corsica and the Dinaric Mountains. It reaches the Urals in the east and France in the west (Hultén et al, 1986;Lengyel, 2009;Borovečki-Voska et al, 2011;Stešević & Berg, 2015). In Poland, the main area of occurrence of the fern is the northern and south-western part of the country.…”

“…It is widespread in central Europe and southern Scandinavia, eastwards reaching European Russia, while it is rare in the north of the British Isles, Corsica, Croatia and Montenegro. In North America it occurs in the north-eastern USA and adjacent south-eastern Canada, and as scattered extending westwards to central California (Hultén & Fries 1986, Stešević & Berg 2015. Botrychium matricariifolium inhabits nutrient-poor short grasslands, forest and road edges, and occasionally also ravine forest or Fraxinus excelsior stands.…”

“…According to the available literature, the ferns of Montenegro comprise 40 species from 16 genera, of which 12 belong to the genus Asplenium (Rohlena, 1942;Pulević, 2005;Stešević and Berg, 2015). We used two distinct datasets to conduct our study: Dataset 1 consisted of presence-only distribution records (483 unique localities in total) of 10 species of Asplenium (Table 1 and Table S1) obtained by georeferencing specimen information held by seven herbaria (Table S2); Dataset 2 consisted of 131 presence/true absence records of seven species (Fig.…”
