Botulinum Neurotoxins (BoNTs) and Their Biological, Pharmacological, and Toxicological Issues: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Botulinum toxins or neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the most potent neurotoxins known, and are currently extensively studied, not only for their potential lethality, but also for their possible therapeutic and cosmetic uses. Currently, seven types of antigenically distinct toxins are known and characterized, produced by a rod-shaped bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. Human poisoning by botulism (presenting with severe neuromuscular paralytic disease) is usually caused by toxins A, B, E, and F type. Poisoning from conta… Show more

“…Thyme oil aids in promoting blood flow to the skin, which improves the healing process and removal of scars and imperfections, leaving the skin even and healthy ( Zarzuelo and Crespo, 2002 ; Salehi et al., 2018 ). Reports of antibacterial activity of thyme oil have been found against Clostridium botulinum , a gram-positive bacterium that produces one of the most lethal neurotoxins known ( De and De, 2019 ; Corsalini et al., 2021 ). In addition, thyme oil significantly reduced the growth of the fungus Pyrenochaeta terrestris during soil treatment, which suggests the potential use of thyme oil in the biological control of plant diseases ( Hussien and Ibrahim, 2020 ).…”

“…Although, the poisoning with this bacteria is few, and almost to be rare, but it represents 5-30% of deaths. The bacteria secrete seven groups of toxins, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G [25].…”
