Bovine bone implant with bovine bone morphogenetic protein in healing a canine ulnar defect

Abstract: Xenograft is considered an alternative material for bone transplantation, but its bone healing capacity is inferior compared to that of autografts and allografts. Here, we tested whether bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) addition enhances the suitability of demineralized xenogeneic bovine bone for bone grafting in dogs, and whether xenogeneic bone is a suitable carrier material for BMPs. The capacity of demineralized bovine bone implants, with and without native partially purified bovine BMP, to heal a 2-cm uln… Show more

“…The ability of BMPs to induce new bone and to heal bone defects has been well established in many experimental animal and clinical studies [7,8,9,11,12,13,14,21,22,24]. The sterilization of BMP before preclinical and clinical application is mandatory but problematic because BMPs do not tolerate heat management.…”

“…Their bone generation potential is considered to be 9 inferior when compared to autografts (Tuominen et al 2001 (Stavropoulos et al 2001(Stavropoulos et al , 2003. In addition, xenografts do however have the same advantage as alloplastic bone grafts, being available in an unlimited supply.…”

“…After lyophilization, BMPs are linked to a carrier, which has the purpose of preserving the surgical cavity for a longer period, as it would normally be rapidly resorbed by the organism. Therefore, one characteristic of these morphogenetic proteins is the need of a vehicle, which can be the demineralized bovine matrix (Damien et al, 1995;Tuominen et al, 2001;Ueda et al, 2001;Guimarães et al, 2004;Curi et al, 2008;Ho et al, 2010).…”
