bovine colostrum - the promising nutraceutical

Abstract: Colostrum is the first milk produced after birth and is particularly rich in immunoglobulins, antimicrobial peptides, and growth factors. It is important for the nutrition, growth, and development of newborn infants and contributes to the immunologic defence of neonates. Recent studies suggest that bovine colostrum or some of its constituents may be useful for the prevention and, to some extent, for the treatment of various infectious diseases. A variety of colostral based preparations have been used as feed s… Show more

“…The immunoglobulins are considered to be one of the most important chemical parameters in colostrum, because they provide antimicrobial protection against infections and confer passive immunity to the newborn until its own immune system matures (Alexieva et al . ). The immunomodulatory effects of colostrum from farm animals, when consumed by humans, have been demonstrated in a number of models, including infectious diseases (Van Hooijdonk et al .…”

“…), which has led some authors to suggest the use of preparations from this product as a supplement in human healthcare (Alexieva et al . ). In recent years, the pharmaceutical and functional‐food industries have increased their search for bioactive compounds from natural foods, such as colostrum, to meet the demands of consumers that are interested in preventative medicine; colostral immunoglobulin supplements are commercially available in many countries.…”

“…Colostrum (early milk produced during the first few days after parturition) not only meets the unique nutritional needs of neonates, but also transfers passive immunity and promotes the growth and development of the gastrointestinal tract ( 1 , 2 ) . While the need for colostrum in neonates is well established, the systemic effect of feeding BC orally to adult humans is gaining increasing attention ( 3 ) . Bovine colostrum (BC) contains several bioactive components ( 4 ) , including growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor-1, insulin-like growth factor-2, transforming growth factor β and epidermal growth factor, antimicrobial compounds such as lactoferrin, and immunomodulatory compounds such as Ig, transferrin and cytokines.…”

“…Because colostrum is very important to the newborn, producers must often make provision to have a source of colostrum available if and when the dam does not provide enough high quality colostrum for the calf. In addition, numerous studies suggest that oral administration of bovine colostrum preparations may contribute to human health care both as part of a health promoting diet and as an alternative or supplement to the medical treatment of specified human diseases (Alexieva et al, 2004). Several studies have evaluated the changes in the chemical composition of cow colostrum after parturition, but there is not available information about buffalo colostrum which represents approximately 49% (Mal, 2008) of lactating ruminants in Egypt.…”
