Bovine Papillomavirus Type 2 Infection and a Series of Mesenchymal Tumors of the Urinary Bladder in Cattle

Abstract: This report describes the histopathology of two hundred and fifty-three mesenchymal tumors of the urinary bladder in cattle grazing on lands rich in bracken fern. Approximately 80% were hemangiomas and angiosarcomas. Hemangioma (capillary, cavernous, and large vessels) was the most frequent mesenchymal tumor and was more common than angiosarcoma. Although the appearance of endothelial cells can vary remarkably, epithelioid angiosarcomas, often containing multinucleated cells, were the most frequent malignant v… Show more

“…In the epidermis, mild to severe acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, prominent parakeratosis, mild to moderate basophilic cytoplasmic swelling, vacuolar degeneration of keratinocytes, and many koilocytes (including keratohyalin granules) were present. Moreover, similar histopathologic features in BPV infection have been previously reported in cattle from Brazil (15,23,24) and from Italy (17,25), and in water buffaloes and cattle from Turkey (19)(20)(21) and from India (26).…”

“…Considering the ruminant PV genomes, the Delta PVs are more often involved in malignant lesions hitherto (Borzacchiello & Roperto, ; Martano et al., ; Roperto, Munday, Corrado, Goria, & Roperto, ). In cattle, the BPVs 1 and 2 are the most frequently reported in urothelial bladder tumours worldwide (Borzacchiello & Roperto, ; Martano et al., ; Roperto, Munday, et al., ; Roperto, Russo, et al., ).…”

Recently, the involvement of BPVs 13 and 14 as causative agents of urinary bladder tumours in cattle grazing on pasture containing bracken fern has been suggested through detection of their genome in single‐ and co‐infections or evidence of their E5 expression in affected cattle from Italy (Roperto, Munday, et al., ; Roperto, Russo, et al., ; Roperto, Russo, Ozkul, Corteggio, et al., 2013).…”

“…19 While there was no histopathologic evidence of papilloma 44 or herpes virus 12 infection, its potential causative role cannot be ruled out without further molecular analysis. 27 In conclusion, the present study is the first to report intestinal adenocarcinoma in Sika deer. The disease occurred at an unusually high incidence in a single herd, and the degree of uniformity in tumor morphology differs markedly from findings in other animal species, suggesting a novel syndrome.…”
