Bovine Paraoxonase 1 Activities in Serum and Distribution in Lipoproteins

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an enzyme associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and has a protective effect against oxidation of lipoproteins in mammals. We investigated PON1 enzyme activities in bovine serum and its distribution among bovine serum lipoproteins. Paraoxonase activity and arylesterase activity in serum (152 Holstein cows and 42 Japanese Blacks) were 275 ± 55 U/ml and 130 ± 27 U/ml (mean ± SD), respectively. There was a high correlation (r=0.962) between the two enzyme activities, and … Show more

“…3). There was also a significant correlation between PON1 and ARE (r=0.96, P<0.01) like the report of Miyamoto et al [28] . On the other hand, there were no correlations between activities of PON1 or ARE and TAS or HDL-C levels (P>0.05).…”

“…There was a significant correlation between paraoxonase and arylesterase activity values in each period, with the highest value in the lactation peak. This might indicate that there is no polymorphism that can be distinguished by difference in P/A ratio in the studied serum samples, as well as no polymorphism or trimodal pattern was seen in Holstein-Friesian and Japanese Black cows (Miyamoto et al 2005).…”

“…The bovine PON1 paraoxonase/arylesterase ratio in Holstein-Friesian, Polish Red and Norwegian cattle was constant suggesting there is no trimodal distribution like in humans and rabbits, when using two enzymatic activities towards paraoxon and phenyl acetate (Kulka et al 2014, Kulka et al 2016. Also no trimodal pattern was observed in Japanese Black breed where both activities where correlated (Miyamoto et al 2005). …”

“…Less than about 5% of PON1 activity for both substrates was found in very low density lipoprotein (VLDLs) and low density lipoprotein (LDLs) fractions. In the Holstein Friesian, Japanese Blacks, Swiss Blacks and Montofon bovine breeds PON1 was identified as 43 kDa protein (Miyamoto et al 2005, Erzengin et al 2014.…”
