Bovine Serum Albumin-Conjugated Ferrimagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles to Enhance the Biocompatibility and Magnetic Hyperthermia Performance

Abstract: Magnetic hyperthermia is a fast emerging, non-invasive cancer treatment method which is used synergistically with the existing cancer therapeutics. We have attempted to address the current challenges in clinical magnetic hyperthermia-improved biocompatibility and enhanced heating characteristics, through a single combinatorial approach. Both superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) of size 10 nm and ferrimagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (FIONs) of size 30 nm were synthesized by thermal decompositio… Show more

“…Hemolysis determination is a facile method for the evaluation of the hemolytic properties of MNPs. This method can be performed by measuring the spectrophotometric absorbance of the sample at 540 nm based on the haemoglobin level, taking into consideration a positive and a negative control [88].…”

“…[17][18][19] One of the most effective methods of modification is the covalent modification of MNP surface using various alkoxysilane reagents. 20 Alkoxysilanes are commercially available reagents that contain various functional groups such as amino, [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] mercapto, [26][27][28][29] glycidyloxy, 26,30,31 cyano, 27,32 carboxylic, aldehyde, and isocyanate 27 groups. Following the modification, alkoxysilanes form a cross-linked silicone layer with functional groups covering the surface of nanoparticles.…”

“…Albumin, as a biocompatible globular protein, is one of the most attractive natural polymers for the surface modification and functionalization of MNPs . Because of several advantages of albumin such as no immunogenicity, biocompatibility and long half‐life, numerous studies have been done to design novel albumin‐based nanocarriers over the past two decades …”
