Brain Gym® is a popular commercial program claiming that adherence to its regimen will result in more efficient learning in an almost miraculous manner. However, a review of the theoretical foundations of Brain Gym® and the associated peer-reviewed research studies failed to support the contentions of the promoters o… Show more

“…The drive to create better pedagogy means that educators always have their eyes open to the possible benefits of new ideas. A downside to this eagerness is they might adopt the latest fad that promises a quick fix, without solid evidence to support its effectiveness (e.g., Della & Anderson, 2012;Hyatt, 2007;Kirschner, 2017) This fast pace of change can affect participation as schools might find it difficult to commit to longer term projects. Furthermore, the appeal of how something new might have a positive impact on the school can make it difficult to recruit schools to participate if they know there is a chance that they are in a control group.…”

“…The “unfortunate misinterpretation of the neurobiological literature” has brought on a series of “neuromyths” and false beliefs in the field of education, such as “more is better” and “earlier is better” (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1968; Goswami, 2006; Howard-Jones, 2007; Hyatt, 2007). These unfortunate misinterpretations have also encouraged false brain-based ideas in the education industry, with products such as Brain Gym ® , Baby Einstein™, the use of flashcards in classrooms, attempt to repattern the child’s brain through co-ordination exercises, so-called educational toys and videos, etc., all of these based on the scientifically wrong assumption that children’s learning depends on an enriched environment during the period of synaptogenesis.…”
