Brain imaging with improved acceleration and SNR at 7 Tesla obtained with 64‐channel receive array

Abstract: Purpose: Despite the clear synergy between high channel counts in a receive array and magnetic fields ≥ 7 Tesla, to date such systems have been restricted to a maximum of 32 channels. Here, we examine SNR gains at 7 Tesla in unaccelerated and accelerated images with a 64-receive channel (64Rx) RF coil. Methods: A 64Rx coil was built using circular loops tiled in 2 separable sections of a close-fitting form; custom designed preamplifier boards were integrated into each coil element. A 16-channel transmitter arr… Show more

“…One way to overcome the sensitivity problem of acquiring high resolution fMRI is to use ultra-high field strengths in combination with high channel count receiver arrays (Lagore et al, 2020), an approach which has proven extremely productive, to this end, in human studies Martino et al, 2018Martino et al, , 2011Uğurbil et al, 2019Uğurbil et al, , 2003Yacoub et al, 2001;Zimmermann et al, 2011). While some macaque studies focused on resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) (Gilbert et al, 2016;Goulas et al, 2017;Hutchison et al, , 2011Schaeffer et al, 2018;Vincent et al, 2009Vincent et al, , 2007 to date, to our knowledge, resolutions in macaque rsfMRI continue to be greater than 1 mm 3 as well as longer than 1 second.…”

“…In addition, there have been reports that cryoprobes increase SNR up to 40-50% without losing tissue characteristics in vivo [49][50][51] . The human MR scanner hardware also has been improved including main fields of 7T 29,52 , multi-channel RF coils with up to 64 channels 52 , and head only imaging gradient coil 53,54 . The employment of improved MR hardware will significantly increase SNR and spatial resolution.…”

“…With the reduced slice-FOV tested here ( Figure 7A-C), the R × N MB = 6 acquisitions produced reasonable looking acquisitions, although they likely pushed the limit of usability without employing a denser coil array. 80,81 Increasing the spatial separation between collapsed slices improved the reconstruction image quality ( Figure 7D-F), as expected. 79 We are currently investigating improvements to the SMS acquisition and reconstruction, including adding gradient blips to enable arbitrary FOV shifts 82 and adapting the single slice-GRAPPA kernel used here to a multi-kernel approach that accounts for phase imperfections in odd/even k-space lines 83 and intensity differences across segments.…”
