Brazilian Dental Students’ Attitudes About Provision of Care for Patients Living in Poverty

Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate dental students' attitudes toward people living in poverty and the extent to which their perceptions were associated with their willingness to treat those patients in their future practice. All 910 dental students enrolled in three Brazilian public universities in 2010 were invited to take part in a cross-sectional survey. A total of 766 students (83.7% response rate) completed the self-administered questionnaire on their perceptions of and attitudes about poverty and… Show more

“…A literature search showed that few studies in nursing education use tools to attitudes about poverty. This finding might be justified because limited systematization of poverty teaching assessment occurs in the training of nursing students, and when this content is offered, it occurs in an unsystematic and sporadic way in classes (Blair, 2010), not as part of the curricular component of undergraduate courses (Dos Santos et al, 2017;Watts et al, 2021). Knowledge of the effective ways to teach students about the intersection of poverty and health is still scarce (Reutter et al, 2004;Sanko et al, 2021).…”

“…The two styles of work are often in contrast, both with strengths and weaknesses. Young dentists in UK reported to prefer to work in private practice [13], while a similar sample of Brazilian dental students at the end of their academic career reported the opposite [14]. This dissimilarity preference may be influenced by characteristics associated with the work, such as financial lucrativeness, professional status, job security, flexible work options, and the independence of a career in healthcare [12,[15][16][17][18].…”
