Breaking-Wave Interaction with Tandem Cylinders under Different Impact Scenarios

Abstract: The interaction of plunging breaking waves with a pair of cylinders placed in tandem is 2 investigated using the open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model REEF3D. 3The model is validated using experimental data for total wave forces and free surface for are generally found to be less than the force on a single cylinder for the particular scenario.

“…Some of the CFD-based NWTs in the current literature are those presented by Yang and Stern [1], Jacobsen et al [2] in OpenFOAM, Higuera et al [3] in OpenFOAM and REEF3D presented by Bihs et al [4]. These NWTs have been used to simulate different phenomena such as spilling breaking waves [5,6], plunging breaking waves [7], breaking wave forces [8][9][10], wave loads [11][12][13], wave interaction with permeable coastal structures [14,15] and wave interaction with floating bodies [16].…”

“…In the present manuscript, the open‐source CFD code REEF3D is used. The model has been used extensively for complex wave hydrodynamics problems in the field of coastal and ocean engineering such as breaking waves , wave energy converter devices , non‐breaking wave forces , and breaking wave forces . A novel approach for the geometry description for the six degree of freedom (6DOF) algorithm is proposed.…”

“…where p represents the pressure and τ is the normal component of the stress tensor. The numerical model has been used in the past for a wide range of marine applications such as wave-structure interaction [50,51], breaking wave forces [35], floating body dynamics [48], sloshing [52], irregular wave analysis [24,37,53] and sediment transport [54].…”

“…The numerical analysis is performed with the open-source hydrodynamics model REEF3D [34]. The numerical model has been successfully used to study various coastal and marine engineering problems [22,24,[35][36][37]. The present approach to reconstruct the irregular free surface elevation is based on the coupling of the Dirichlet inlet boundary condition with the irregular wave characteristics.…”
