The aim of the research in field conditions was to establish grain yield and some yield components in three wheat varieties depending on seed size, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 mm, using split-plot method in four replications. The highest number of plants (477 and 518) per m 2 was obtained from the 2.5 and 2.8 mm seed size, respectively. The largest number of spikes (561 and 532) per m 2 was obtained from the 2.8 and 2.5 mm seed size, respectively. The highest coefficient of productive tillering of 1.39 was recorded in the 1.8 mm seed size. Remaining seed fractions (2.0, 2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 mm) gave significantly lower productive tillering. There were very significant differences in wheat grain yield over years, varieties, seed sizes and the year × seed size interactions. The highest wheat grain yields of 7.22 t ha-1 and 6.86 t ha-1 were achieved in the case of 2.5 and 2.2 mm seed sizes, respectively. A positive strong correlation was detected between the number of overwintered plants and the grain yield (r = 0.63**). Moreover a positive strong correlation was established between the number of spikes and the grain yield (r = 0.70**), while the negative weak correlation was recorded between the coefficient of productive tillering and the grain yield (r =-0.32**). With the same sowing norm, a large seed produces a significantly higher number of plants and spikes per m 2 than small seed, which is important for the grain yield.

Assessment of Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Algerian Saharan Maize Populations for Tolerance under Drought and No-Nitrogen Stresses

Increasing drought incidence and infertile soils require the improvement of maize for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under drought conditions. The objectives were to assess tolerance and genetic effects of Algerian populations under no-nitrogen and water stress. We evaluated a diallel among six Algerian maize populations under no-nitrogen vs. 120 kg/ha N fertilization and drought vs. control. Variability was significant among populations and their crosses for NUE under drought. Additive genetic effects could be capitalized using the populations BAH and MST, with high grain nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE). The most promising crosses were SHH × AOR with no-nitrogen supply under both water regimes for NUtE, AOR × IGS, under water stress for partial factor productivity (PFP), and well-watered conditions with nitrogen supply for protein content; AOR × IZM for agronomic nitrogen use efficiency (AE) under water stress; and AOR × BAH for grain nutrient utilization efficiency (NUtE) under well-watered conditions with nitrogen. These parents could be promising for developing drought-tolerant or/and low nitrogen hybrids to improve these traits. Maximum heterosis could be exploited using those populations and crosses. Reciprocal recurrent selection could be used to take advantage of additive and non-additive gene effects found based on estimations of genetic parameters.

Early maturity is a highly important factor in the interrelations between yield, grain moisture, and plant density, contributing to cost-efficient maize production. Landraces conserved in gene banks present a promising basis for enriching the diversity of early maize breeding material. To start and speed up the mobilization of the maize genetic resources maintained in the ex situ Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje gene bank collection, which are currently scattered, little studied, and underused, 63 landraces were selected as new potential sources of early maturity; their test-cross performance with two divergent early testers was evaluated. The majority of the landraces with a prevailed flint type (29) exhibited heterosis for yield when crossed with the Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic—Iowa Dent tester (102NS), out of which 20 top crosses expressed grain moisture below the defined threshold value (21.1%). The best performing landraces can be used as a starting point for a new pre-breeding programme for the broadening of flint maize breeding material. In parallel, nine landraces expressed simultaneous heterosis when crossed with the flint tester (14NS), exhibiting grain moisture above the threshold value. A simultaneous heterotic effect with two divergent inbred testers implies the existence of an independent heterotic pool. These findings will contribute to the broadening of maize breeding material for early maturity and low grain moisture at harvest, which are important goals in maize breeding.
