Brewers’ spent grain liquor as a feedstock for lactate production with Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis

Abstract: Brewers' spent grain (BSG) is a low-cost by-product of the brewing process. BSG liquor names the liquid components of BSG, mainly glucose, maltose, and long-chain -1,4-glycosidic bond glucose oligomers. These substances should be separated in existing BSG biorefineries, as they might lead to an increased formation of microbeinhibiting compounds in well-established hydrothermal/enzymatic saccharification processes. In most cases, this liquid fraction is discarded. The present study presents for the first time a… Show more

“…The solid residue was rehydrated after each pressing step with deionized water equalling the volume of the liquid fraction removed. Since the mentioned pressing step resulted in numerous advantages, dextrin‐ and sugar‐free BSG were also tested in this study in order to achieve a more holistic perspective on the utilization of BSG (biorefining concept) [ 54 , 55 ]. Afterwards, the BSG residue was dried at 323 K for 48 h (UF110, Memmert GmbH & Co. KG, Schwabach, Germany) and ground to fine particles by a disc mill (Fidibus Classik, Komo GmbH & Co. KG, Hopfgarten, Germany).…”
