Brief communication: Infracranial maturation in the skeletal collection from Coimbra, Portugal: New aging standards for epiphyseal union

Abstract: Age at death of a single skeletal individual or a group is essential information in archaeological, paleoanthropological, and forensic contexts. Dental remains are the most commonly used age indicators, but when the dentition is not available, or too few teeth are present for an accurate age assessment, other age indicators such as skeletal maturation must be used. Of particular utility in this regard is the fusion of the epiphyses of the infracranial skeleton. Here we present new aging standards based on the … Show more

“…Another skeletal element that confirms the age range is the left os coxae: the anterior inferior iliac spine and the triradiate complex are completely fused and this indicates an age of around 18 years 5,6 . Finally, the epiphysis of the ischial tuberosity and the anterior iliac crest are not completely fused and they place the age range between 17 and 21 years 5,6,7 . After evaluating all the available methods, it is most likely that the individual is between 17 and 19 years of age.…”

“…Age at death estimation was obtained following the recommendations of Işcan et al (1984), Mincer et al (1993), Scheuer and Black (2000), and Coqueugniot and Weaver (2007). The protocol for morphological sex estimation followed standard osteological techniques recommended by Buikstra and Ubelaker (1994).…”

“…Third molar root apices were still open (Mincer et al, 1993), the distal epiphyses of the ulna and radius were not completely fused, and the distal epiphyseal line of the fibulae was also visible. Ossification stage of the sternal end of the clavicle suggests an age below 25 years old (Scheuer and Black, 2000;Coqueugniot and Weaver, 2007). Considering all of the age at death indicators, it can be inferred that the age bracket of this individual was probably between the ages of 18-20 years old at the time of death.…”

“…This individual was inspected macroscopically, and is estimated to have been between 13 and 19 years old at the time of death based on epiphyseal fusion (Coqueugniot and Weaver, 2007;Cardoso, 2008a, b) and dental eruption (Ubelaker, 1989;Cardoso, 2005).…”
