Brief Report: Dialister as a Microbial Marker of Disease Activity in Spondyloarthritis

Abstract: Objective Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota has been widely established in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is significant clinical and genetic overlap between spondyloarthritis (SpA) and IBD, and up to 50% of all patients with SpA exhibit microscopic signs of bowel inflammation, often bearing particular resemblance to early Crohn's disease, a subtype of IBD. This study was undertaken to assess the relationship between intestinal microbial composition, gut histology, and disease activity markers in… Show more

“…Intestinal inflammation is strongly associated with the mucosal microbiota profile of SpA patients as demonstrated in the recent study from Tito et al [42]. In this study, the bacterial community composition of inflamed biopsies clustered separate from that of non-inflamed biopsies.…”

“…This is established somewhat more clearly in other diseases such as AS, psoriasis and PsA. For example, in AS there is evidence of gut microbiome dysbiosis with an abundance of the genus Dialister correlated with disease activity [35]. Supporting this information, Lin et al [36] showed that the gut microbiota is different in HLA-B*27 transgenic mice compared with wild-type mice, showing a correlation between possession of HLA-B*27 and the shaping of the gut microbiome.…”

“…This finding of increased Bacteroides in arthritis subjects is largely limited to pediatrics. Several studies in adults with a variety of arthritides have demonstrated the opposite . Even the study by Stoll showed decreased fecal abundance of Bacteroides among a cohort of adult subjects with long‐standing SpA .…”
