Broadband Microwave Signal Processing Enabled by Polarization-Based Photonic Microwave Phase Shifters

Abstract: A polarization-based photonic microwave phase shifter that implemented with an orthogonal circularly-/ linearly-polarized wavelength generator incorporated with a polarizer provides advantages of high scalability, high-speed phase tuning, large operation bandwidth, full-360-degree tunability, flat power response, and compact configuration, making it a key enabler for tunable microwave photonic filtering, optically controlled beamforming, high speed phase coding, large timebandwidth product signal generation, p… Show more

“…In (1), small-signal modulation is assumed so that sidebands with orders larger than 2 are neglected. The signal in (1) is then split into two paths, and each path is followed by a polarizer and a PD to realize a photonic microwave phase shifter [27]. The expressions of the output current of the two phase shifters are,…”

“…In this paper, a broadband and filterless photonic microwave IRM is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on a dual-channel polarization-modulated photonic microwave phase shifter. The dual-channel phase shifter is realized by an orthogonal circularly-polarized wavelength generator, an optical coupler (OC), two polarizers and two photodetectors (PDs) [27], [28]. The phase shifts of the two channels can be independently and continuously tuned by the polarizer in each channel, and opposite phase shifts could be introduced to the RF-and image-induced IF signals.…”

“…Based on the broadband microwave photonic phase shifters, a radar beamforming network with a broad spectral range can be constructed. In this section, we show a typical beamforming system constructed by a multi-channel microwave photonic phase shifter realized based on electro-optical polarization modulations [44], [45]. Fig.…”

“…In order to realize the lossless signal transmission for the lidar scanning signals of the control host and other slaves, a signal transmission unit was designed. The unit used FPGA as the core device of the signal processing module and adopted EP1C6Q144 [14] as the chip FPGA. After processing by FPGA, the micro-distortion information of the lidar scanning signal was stored in the off-chip SRAM.…”
