Bronchiectasis: assessment by thin-section CT.

Abstract: To assess the accuracy of computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation of bronchiectasis, we performed thin-section CT in 36 patients with clinical findings suggestive of this diagnosis. CT was performed with 1.5-mm section thickness and 10-mm intersection spacing. Bilateral (eight patients) and unilateral (28 patients) bronchograms were obtained. CT and bronchographic findings were correlated in 44 lungs. In 15 lungs no bronchiectasis was observed on CT scans and bronchograms. In 25 lungs both examinations accu… Show more

“…Although HRCT scanning is widely used for the diagnosis of bronchiectasis (Grenier et al 1986), the subjects in this study were evaluated using conventional spiral CT because they wanted to be examined for the presence of lung cancer. Using a different CT protocol may not have detected the lesions and may have missed the cases of bronchiectasis.…”

“…Diagnosis of bronchiectasis is confirmed by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), which is both sensitive and specific in detecting pathologically dilated bronchi (Grenier et al 1986). Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of bronchiectasis based on computed tomography (CT) findings, the gold standard for the diagnosis of bronchiectasis, in adult subjects who underwent a health screening program and chest CT.…”

“…The use of thin-section CT is superior to chest radiography for the detection of bronchiectasis or mucus plugging (Naidich et al 1982;Grenier et al 1986). Evidence for airway-ectasia was found in all of our patients with DPB.…”

“…23,25 La prueba más sensible es la tomografía axial computarizada de alta resolución (TACAR). Su sensibilidad es del 96% y su especificidad del 93%, 58 por lo que se considera la técnica diagnóstica de elección. 23,25 El diagnóstico se establece cuando el diámetro interno bronquial es mayor que el diáme-tro externo del vaso adyacente, o bien se visualizan bronquios a menos de 1 cm de la superficie pleural.…”
