Bronchioloalveolar Cell Carcinoma Presenting as a “Non-Resolving Consolidation” for Two Years

Abstract: Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC), a rare form of lung malignancy, is usually seen in non-smokers and women. Three distinct histological forms have been identified viz, mucinous, non-mucinous and mixed or indeterminate. The mucinous variety of BAC may present as a consolidation which is very difficult to differentiate from an infective pneumonia. We present a case of a middle aged female who was evaluated for a "non-resolving consolidation" for a period of two years. She had undergone an inconclusive bronchos… Show more

“…The affected alveoli and normal alveoli are arranged in a mixed manner, which in this case manifested in the imaging study as diffuse and vague patchy shadows throughout both lungs. These findings are consistent with pneumonia-like changes; therefore, IMA can easily be misdiagnosed as pneumonia (4,15,16). The diffuse, patchy, and blurry shadows throughout both lungs are nonspecific and can be noted in various pulmonary infectious diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis.…”

“…exacerbations of ILD were considered prediagnosis. Mir et al(8) made a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma after 2 years of follow-up of a consolidation covering almost the entire left lower lobe without worsening the patient's clinical status and without significant change in the size of the lesion. Despite antimicrobial therapy, the existence of bilateral multilobar consolidation and GGA on lung imaging suggested malignancy.…”
