Bronchopulmonary dysplasia as a risk factor for asthma in school children and adolescents: A systematic review

Abstract: Based on the studies reviewed, it cannot be argued that BPD, as an independent factor of prematurity, increases the risk of asthma defined by clinical parameters in school-children and adolescents. Further studies of greater methodological quality and homogeneous diagnostic criteria of BPD and asthma are needed for improved assessment of this association.

“…Keywords: cord blood cells, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, prevention, extremely preterm infants, autologous BACKGROUND Preterm birth, a significant growing health concern around the world, affects 5-18% of newborn infants (1,2). Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a severe and frustrating preterm complication causing adverse long-term outcomes (3,4). The incidence of BPD in extremely preterm neonates was reported to be as high as 68% (5).…”

“…Currently, with the improvement of intensive care interventions, the mortality rate of extremely preterm neonates with BPD has decreased (7-9). However, many survivors still face a lifetime of disability, including long time dependence of oxygen therapy, asthma, and repeated hospital admission because of pneumonia even in developed countries (4,6). Although new ventilation strategies and pharmacological treatments have been applied, there are no curative therapies available to target the underlying structural changes of the lungs leading to the symptoms (3).…”

“…About 50% of pneumonia and about 90% of bronchiolitis in children is caused by respiratory the syncytial virus (RSV), the infection of which in children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia is often associated with the need for hospitalization and MV, which in turn leads to pulmonary dysfunction. RSV infection in children with BPD also poses a significant risk of developing bronchial hyperreactivity and bronchial asthma [111][112][113][114].…”
