Buccal Film: A Novel Approach for Oral Mucosal Drug Delivery System

Abstract: Buccal drug delivery especially refers to the delivery of drugs through the buccal mucosal membrane lining of the oral cavity. For geriatric and pediatric patients who undergo difficulties in swallowing conventional oral solid dosage forms, the buccal film is a better alternative. The buccal film is appropriate for the drugs which experience high first-pass metabolism and is used for enhancing bioavailability with reducing dosing frequency to mouth plasma peak levels, which thus limit side-effects and make it … Show more

“…The retention of the buccal film was observed after two minutes when the contents of the beaker were gently agitated to simulate the conditions of the buccal cavity. The time required for the film to detach from the mucosal surface was used to assess the mucoadhesion time [24].…”

“… Improved interaction with the client [39].  Precise administration of the dosage  Increased safety and stability [40]  If there are any negative reactions, it is simple to remove from the administration site [34]  Gels and ointments for the buccal mucosa are semi-solid dosage forms that have the benefit of being simple to apply to the mucosa [41]…”

“…Additionally, MTX is chemically unstable; it quickly breaks down when exposed to extremes of pH or temperature, light, or both. These factors make it difficult to produce suitable oral dose formulations for medications like MTX, which are highly lipophilic and photo-unstable [2,3]. The limited bioavailability is the main obstacle to the development of different dosage formulations.…”
