Le Manifeste de l’UNESCO sur les bibliothèques publiques investit celles-ci de quatre missions : information, alphabétisation, éducation et culture. L’objectif de cet article est de relever les définitions de ces quatre concepts dans la littérature en sciences de l’information ou dans des sciences connexes, le cas échéant.La revue de la littérature démontre que ces concepts font l’objet de théories divergentes. De plus, les sciences de l’information ne traitent pas d’un point de vue théorique des missions autres que l’information. Ces quatre concepts restent donc bien flous et insatisfaisants pour définir les missions des bibliothèques publiques.The UNESCO Public Libraries Manifesto outlines the four missions of a public library: information, literacy, education and culture. The purpose of this article is to identify definitions of these four concepts in the library and related literatures.The literature indicates that these concepts are governed by several theories. Furthermore, information science examines the information mission from a theoretical point of view, ignoring the other concepts or missions. The four concepts are poorly circumscribed and are unsatisfactory when defining the missions of the public library.El Manifiesto de la UNESCO sobre las bibliotecas públicas les adjudica cuatro misiones: información, alfabetización, educación y cultura. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las definiciones de estos cuatro conceptos en la literatura sobre ciencias de la información o sobre ciencias conexas, según sea el caso.La revisión de la literatura demuestra que estos conceptos son objeto de teorías divergentes. Asimismo, las ciencias de la información abordan desde un punto de vista teórico únicamente a la misión de la información. Por lo tanto, estos cuatro conceptos aún definen de manera inexacta e insatisfactoria las misiones de las bibliotecas públicas

However, Ferguson, Fowler, Hanley, and Schafer (2002) point out the challenge of not having enough staff to fully implement the UMass Digital Library project. Information and Communications technology (ICT) has been widely applied in digital library services to improve the knowledge and the public interest. Researchers can easily obtain the information of interest through internet surfing. Digital libraries seek to provide prospective readership with alternative materials for reading. They also preserve the culture, customs that could be learnt by future generations. The utilization of digital libraries as learning resources include educational and community aspects. The purpose of this paper was to review and analyse the impact of a digital library system in education on potential readership.
