Building a Research Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, Part II

Abstract: This article presents four case studies of rehabilitation science programs that have created enduring research efforts: one in physical therapy, one in interdisciplinary rehabilitation sciences, and two in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Several themes emerge from these case studies. First, building an enduring research program takes time and significant foundational work. Most importantly, it is crucial to have the support of the dean, academic institution, and medical center. This seems to be a prerequ… Show more

“…ME leaders also provide direction to the recruitment of new faculty scholars at their institutions, which is another contributor to research productivity levels. A common characteristic of successful RCB and related productivity is effective recruitment (Chan et al, 2009;NIDRR, 2011). Never has the capability of institutions to attract the most talented investigators been more critical considering the research resources and prestige at stake (Chen et al, 2014).…”

“…University research culture relies on RI systems. RIs are pertinent to and influence research productivity as investigators need appropriate resources to successfully develop, build, and carryout R&D programs (Chan et al, 2009; Moore, Johnson, Manyibe, Washington, Uchegbu, & Eugene-Cross, 2012; Moore, Johnson, Manyibe, Washington, Uchegbu, Eugene-Cross, et al, 2012; NIDRR, 2011). For example, larger journal subscription databases lead to higher levels of research productivity (Bland, Center, Finstad, Risbey, & Staples, 2005; Shariatmadari & Mahdi, 2012).…”
