Building Better Theory by Bridging the Quantitative–Qualitative Divide*

Abstract: Qualitative methods for data collection and analysis are not mystical, but they are powerful, particularly when used to build new or refine existing theories. This article provides an introduction to qualitative methods and an overview of tactics for ensuring rigor in qualitative research useful for the novice researcher, as well as more experienced researchers interested in expanding their methodological repertoire or seeking guidance on how to evaluate qualitative research. We focus our discussion on the qua… Show more

“…Starting with this premise, qualitative methods allow researchers to discover to reveal and understand relationships between variables even within complex processes, and to illustrate the influence of the social context (Shah and Corley 2006). Within qualitative methods, case studies are particularly useful research methods when ''a how or why question is being asked about a contemporary set of events over which the investigator has little or no control'' (Yin 2009).…”

“…The collection of archival data has two purposes: to capture patenting behavior and to allow for triangulation with interview data (Eisenhardt, 1989;Yin, 2003, p. 14;Shah and Corley, 2006). In particular, we conducted eight in-depth interviews with patent and R&D executives of printing machine manufacturers.…”

“…A minority (23%) used mixed methods and only a fraction (7%) employed a longitudinal design. We believe that the methodology ratios identified by Shah and Corley (2006) and by Shortland and Altman (2011) as well as the analysis provided by Shaffer et al (2012) represent the spread of research methodologies employed in the study of E&R in general, with some notable exceptions, such as ethnographic studies (e.g. Lauring & Selmer, 2009) and the use of supplementary secondary data (e.g.…”

“…Over 40% of the studies are qualitative, another indication that the field is in the early stages of theoretical development (Shah & Corley, 2006). Shortland and Altman (2011) conducted a comprehensive analysis of articles in English language academic refereed journals on corporate expatriates, with a specific reference to women, published between 1980 and 2008.…”
