Building evacuation time optimization using constraint-based design approach

Abstract: The number of large public buildings is growing rapidly in function and complexity, which cause the evacuation path in case of fire to be too long and complex increasing the evacuation time. In this paper, a constraint-based design approach is introduced to automatically generate the optimal position of the building evacuation door to minimize the length of the escape route, thus reducing the evacuation time. The position of the evacuation doors is ruled by design specifications and building structures, in thi… Show more

“…ird, it offers inaccurate results when individuals in a high-density crowd are forced into a fixed discrete cell, but large size of cells may cause a loss in computational efficiency. e social force model [13] presents pedestrian behaviors microscopically through social fields triggered by individual social behaviors, which enables researchers to explore new relations and mathematical rules of evacuee behaviors such as decision adaption. e majority of studies have investigated from an architectural optimization perspective [33,36] to improve evacuation process and pedestrian decision-making with the social force model.…”

“…Alam and Habib [14] identified the most likely collision hotspots by the Bayesian theory, and encodes them with the micro simulation model of collision occurrence module in dynamic traffic, revealing that collision has a serious impact on evacuation. Facing the overlong and complex evacuation routes in large underground public space, Gao et al [15] introduced a constraint-based design model to automatically optimize the location of evacuation gates in buildings; Under space constraint and design constraint, the introduced model shortens the evacuation time by minimizing the length of the evacuation route. Li and Xu [16] proposed a safe evacuation model for confined space, which considers the differences in individual features and building factors.…”

“…Furthermore, intense hysteria and stamping can contribute to multiple individuals evacuating in emergencies. The layout of escapes from structures, human psychology and behavior, and numerous social, behavioral patterns can profoundly impact evacuation performance, which leads to being trapped [3]. Thus, it is a need for a high-rise building to have an evacuation model to allow evacuees to exit the building without any harm safely.…”
