Burden of colonoscopy compared to non-cathartic CT-colonography in a colorectal cancer screening programme: randomised controlled trial

Abstract: In a CRC screening programme, colonoscopy invitees expected the screening procedure and bowel preparation to be more burdensome than CT-colonography invitees. In participants, CT-colonography was scored as more burdensome than colonoscopy. Intended participation in a next screening round was comparable.

“…Previous work in our center, using focus group sessions with colonoscopy patients, showed a substantial number of concerns that were not covered by the mGHAA-9 or the GRS [10]. To ensure that all relevant items would be incorporated into the questionnaire, we designed the current questionnaire that has since been used in other studies [16].…”

“…This rational might be true, but the recently observed high prevalence of proximal serrated lesions in the general population (approximately 12%) clearly shows that these lesions are also frequently found in a nonfamilial context. 19,20 A more stringent WHO-criterion 2 seems therefore necessary to delineate relatives with a suspected increased familial risk from those with one or a few small sporadic serrated polyps with likely no greater cancer risk.…”

“…For example, one trial provides evidence that participants expected a reduced-laxative preparation to be less burdensome than a powerful-laxative preparation but that experiences were more burdensome, despite the effects most likely being objectively less severe [30]. This suggests that the participants may have received information on reduced-laxative preparation that was overly positive, leading to unrealistic expectations that detracted from their experience.…”
