Burden of disease and economic impact of human Streptococcus suis infection in Viet Nam

Abstract: Background Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic disease mainly affecting men of working age and can result in death or long-term sequelae, including severe hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction. We aimed to quantify the burden of disease and economic impact of this infection in Viet Nam. Methods The annual disease incidence for the period 2011–2014 was estimated based on surveillance data using a multiple imputation approach. We calculated disease burden in… Show more

“…In this study, the burden of disease was quantified in term of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The DALYs lost ranged 1,437–1,866 from 2011–2014 with the mean direct cost per episode of US$1,635 (95%CI 1,352–1,923) reflecting a significant economic impact [ 4 ]. However, long-term consequences including cardiac complication after infective endocarditis (IE) and follow-up audiological testing were not captured in the model.…”

“…Among all serotypes, S. suis 2 is the most virulent and frequently isolated serotype from clinically diseased piglets [6,7]. During the last 20 years, sporadic or large outbreaks of human S. suis 2 infections have occurred occasionally worldwide [8,9]. In 1998 and 2005, two outbreaks of S. suis 2 in China caused severe streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome in infected patients with mortalities as high as 62.7% to 81.3% [10].…”
