“…Ougier et al. assessed the cost of the cadmium-related burden of osteoporosis-associated fractures in three European countries (Belgium, France, and Spain) based on the Human Biomonitoring (HBM) study conducted in three countries, suggesting that cadmium exposure plays a major contributory role in the overall societal costs associated with osteoporosis ( 29 ). These findings were consistent with our own.…”

“…The relationship between blood Cd level and osteoporosis has been revealed in a small number of cross-sectional studies ( 29 ). Moreover, a recent study reported that Cd exposure was associated with an up to 23% increase in the incidence of osteoporosis, and the absolute cost of the burden of osteoporosis-related fractures caused by Cd is estimated to range between EUR€ 0.12 and 2.6 billion ( 30 ). Furthermore, Chung revealed that blood Cd concentrations of >1.0 μg/L and >0.5 μg/L were independent risk factors for incident osteoporosis in 243 participants and in 121 women, respectively, from the 2001 to 2002 Korea Genome and Epidemiology Study ( 31 ).…”

“…The benchmark dose limit (NOAEL equivalent) values have been calculated from different endpoints, including, albuminuria [ 112 , 113 ], enzyme-uria [ 114 ], diabetes [ 115 ], infertility [ 13 ], and bone loss [ 116 , 117 , 118 ]. These values all indicated that the toxicity of Cd occurs at very low body burden.…”
