Burden of valvular heart disease, 1990-2017: Results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

Abstract: Background Valvular heart disease (VHD) is expected to cause an increase in public-health problems in the coming years, especially in elderly populations. We aim to estimate the incidence, mortality, and burden of VHD, by age, from 1990 to 2017 in 195 countries and territories. Methods We estimated the incidence, mortality, and burden of VHD based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017. All metrics are presented with their 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). The Socio-… Show more

“…Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of cardiac conditions are essential in the prevention of cardiac cachexia and its complications [ 26 ]. Valvular heart disease (VHD) is an essential cause of cardiovascular disease and complications in patients with aortic stenosis [ 28 , 29 ]. VHD is seen in 2.5% of the US population; it can be the primary cardiovascular risk for ventricular dysfunction due to the detrimental hemodynamic loading [ 30 ].…”

“…The global incidence of valvular heart disease (VHD) has increased by 45% in the last 30 years, with an annual incidence of 401 new cases per 100 000 people 1. This is due to an expanding ageing population and age-related VHD 1.…”

This is due to an expanding ageing population and age-related VHD 1. Echocardiography is the most common imaging modality used to identify patients with VHD as it is non-invasive, portable, widely available and cost-effective, and provides real-time assessment of cardiac structure and function 2.…”

“…It was estimated that more than 42 million people worldwide suffered from VHD ( 1 ). In developing counties, due to the high incidence of rheumatic heart disease, as well as expanding of the aging population (age ≥ 60 years), hence, with the increase in the incidence of degenerative valvular disease ( 2 , 3 ), more attention should be drawn to VHD. Valve replacement surgery (VRS) is the treatment of choice for VHD, however, the surgical mortality was high in the elderly population ( 4 , 5 ).…”
