Burn injury mortality in patients with preexisting and new onset renal disease

Abstract: Preexisting and new onset renal disease results in a significantly higher risk of mortality following burn injury compared to patients without renal disease. Prevention of new onset renal injury and careful management of patients with preexisting renal disease to prevent exacerbation should be pursued.

“…26 Several studies show the effect of comorbidities, such as renal insufficiency, respiratory diseases, and diabetes mellitus, on the increased risk of hospitalacquired infections and mortality. [27][28][29] The relative protection of older children and young adults is likely explained by an absence of the factors previously discussed for young children while also avoiding the comorbidities of older age. Older children and young adults have the advantage of having more developed immune systems, predictable responses to resuscitation, and robust compensatory mechanisms during stress.…”

“…There is a consensus that increased knowledge about the pathophysiology of burns and advances in their treatment including renal replacement therapy and nutritional support, especially in intensive care units, can help reduce burn-related mortality (Brandão et al, 2021; Knowlin et al, 2018; Nitzschke et al, 2017). Improvements in preventing and controlling and infection in patients with burn injuries have largely contributed to a decline in burn mortality (Al-Shaqsi et al, 2013).…”

“…Групою міжнародної ініціативи з якості гострого діалізу (ADQI) були розроблені критерії гострого пошкодження нирок Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN), які розпізнають раннє пошкодження нирок в умовах інтенсивної терапії. AKIN включають змінення креатиніну та діурезу залежно від часу [22].…”
