Burning behavior of cable tray located on a wall with different cable arrangements

Abstract: Summary Cable fire risk analysis is important for fire protection design in nuclear power plants, where multiple horizontal cable trays are mostly located on the walls. Fire experiments using three cable trays with different cable arrangements were conducted in a confined room to investigate the burning behavior of a cable tray on a wall. A corner was formed by the side wall and the cable tray. Hot smoke emitted from the burning cable was trapped in the corner and then ignited the cable on the bottom surface o… Show more

“…Figure 1 shows schematic for the experimental setup for the cable fire experiments. 14 The cable tray fire experiment was performed inside a 5 m (width) × 6 m (length) × 4 m (height) compartment with the door closed. However, there was sufficient leakage due to the low tightness of door to prevent rise of the room pressure.…”

“…Twenty-six cables were placed in each layer on the cable tray for each test. 14 The total mass of cables on the tray was approximately 46.1 kg. The outer layer jacket material and the inner insulation material were composed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).…”

“…12 Many of the previous studies on cable and wire fires focused on their failure, ignition mechanism, and burning behaviors under the condition of external heating. [13][14][15][16][17] They are important for flame spread analyses of cables and fire fighting guide. On the contrary, some researchers had also studied the critical temperature on the surface of power cable, which is the key parameter for early warning.…”

“…The arrangement influence of the cables on the fire characteristics was investigated by e.g. Huang et al [5]. The influence of other factors on fire characteristics and the spread of flame on the surface of electrical cables were investigated in scientific work of Zavaleta et al [6] and Sarazin et al [7].…”
