Burnout syndrome among undergraduate nursing students at a public university

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: to investigate the burnout syndrome and its relationship with demographic and academic variables among undergraduate nursing students at a public university in Southern Brazil. METHOD: a quantitative study with 168 students, by applying an adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey, validated for this study. “…Es un síndrome negativo integrado por tres dimensiones: a) agotamiento emocional, que se caracteriza por falta o carencia de energía, de entusiasmo y un sentimiento de falta de recursos; b) despersonalización-cinismo, que se caracteriza por una respuesta impersonal, fría y cínica hacia los beneficiarios de los servicios o hacia los estudios; c) falta de realización personal-eficacia profesional, conducta evidenciada por una tendencia del sujeto a autoevaluarse en forma negativa, experimentando sentimiento de incompetencia y fracaso (Maslach y Jackson, 1986).
