Buyang Huanwu Decoction attenuates H2O2-induced apoptosis by inhibiting reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction pathway in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Abstract: BackgroundApoptosis of endothelial cells caused by reactive oxygen species plays an important role in ischemia/reperfusion injury after cerebral infarction. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) has been used to treat stroke and stroke-induced disability, however, the mechanism for this treatment remains unknown. In this study, we investigated whether BYHWD can protect human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) from H2O2-induced apoptosis and explored the underlying mechanisms.MethodsTo investigate the effect o… Show more

“…Mounting evidence has accumulated to suggest that Chinese herbal medicines had inhibitory effects on cell apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo [28][29][30][31]. Gui et al [28] demonstrated that astragaloside IV acts directly on podocytes and prevents glucose-induced podocyte apoptosis by increasing Bcl-2 expression and decreasing Bax expression.…”

“…Therefore, it is essential that new therapies be developed to improve ICVD outcome. Recent studies have elucidated the mechanisms of CIRI at cellular and molecular levels, including the generation of large amounts of oxygen free radicals, immune inflammatory damage, and apoptosis, ( 14 ) helping the development of new therapies for CIRI.…”

“…In vitro , BYHWD protects Schwann cells from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) damage [55]. BYHWD also decreases H 2 O 2 -induced apoptosis in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) [56]. Additionally, pretreatment with BYHWD significantly decreases neuronal NOS activity in the striatum cortex and caudate putamen in rats with permanent focal cerebral ischemia [57].…”
