Cadaveric dissection as an educational tool for anatomical sciences in the 21st century

Abstract: Anatomical education has been undergoing reforms in line with the demands of medical profession. The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of a traditional method like cadaveric dissection in teaching/learning anatomy at present times when medical schools are inclining towards student-centered, integrated, clinical application models. The article undertakes a review of literature and analyzes the observations made therein reflecting on the relevance of cadaveric dissection in anatomical education of… Show more

“…Thus, it is not reasonable to conclude that CD is obsolete in medical training. I support the contention of Ghosh [95] that anatomy including CD should be incorporated vertically, in a reasonable manner, into medical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as in internships, along with other modern teaching strategies.…”

“…In a surgical context, dissection not only contributes to one's anatomical knowledge but also enriches a learner's experience in tissue manipulation, manual dexterity, teamwork, professional communication and handling the emotional impact of death . It is profoundly advantaged in its presentation of truly 3D, interactive visuo‐tactile information in a way that no other teaching modality can adequately replicate to synthesize meaning and comprehension .…”

“…Anatomists have long debated the effectiveness of cadaveric dissection in learning gross anatomy (McLachlan et al, ; Ghosh, ; McMenamin et al, ; Wilson et al, ). Cadaveric dissection was chosen as the primary learning modality in this course because it engages the student in active and self‐directed learning while demonstrating authentic human anatomy (McMenamin et al, ).…”
