CAIN-21: An Extensible and Metadata-Driven Multimedia Adaptation Engine in the MPEG-21 Framework

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents the CAIN-21 multimedia adaptation engine, which facilitates the integration of pluggable multimedia adaptation modules, chooses the chain of adaptations to perform and manages its execution. Evolving from CAIN, CAIN-21 complies better with the MPEG-21 framework. Its new features and improvements are discussed in this paper. In addition, the pros and cons are explained with respect to others multimedia adaptation engines, including early CAIN.

“…The work more recently undertaken by a number of research groups thus addresses the use of ontologies to obtain high-level semantic descriptions of the context of usage [14]- [23]. Although some combine standards with ontologies [17], [23], a great part of the published work relies on proprietary models to acquire and represent context.…”

“…Although some combine standards with ontologies [17], [23], a great part of the published work relies on proprietary models to acquire and represent context. Moreover, they usually concentrate on a limited number of adaptations and most often upon Web content only or entertainment video and try to explore context to improve usability aspects.…”

“…Conversely, CAIN-21 is not restricted to particular media types. To this end, CAIN-21 supports the integration of third-party pluggable and reusable multimedia conversion modules referred to as Component Adaptation Tools (CATs) [10]. A CAT is characterized by the set of parameters describing the media to be adapted and it explicitly specifies the set of conversions that it can perform.…”

“…Multimedia properties refer to all the elements of the multimedia system, including the media resource, the usage environment, and the adaptation capabilities. To access these properties, CAIN-21 implements a highly efficient addressing mechanism by means of XPath [13] expressions [10]. Section 3 describes this mechanism and Sect.…”
