Calcaneal angle in Ugandans

Abstract: We investigated the calcaneal angle from 206 unilateral radiographs of the lateral aspect of the foot in Ugandans, comprising 114 males and 92 females, aged 20-40 years. The mean angle in males was 35.1 degrees with a standard deviation (SD) of 7.5 degrees and, in females, 37.6 degrees with SD 5.6 degrees. The range of the angle for both sexes together was 20-50 degrees with females having a significantly higher mean value than males (P < 0.01). There was also a significant difference in the angle between Ugan… Show more

“…Female subjects had a mean BA of 36.386.02 while their male counterpart had a BA of 36.638.42. There was no significant gender difference and bilateral asymmetry in reported BA at P>0.05 5,8 . The range of variation in calcaneal angle have never been reported to exceed 15 0 , while the lowest and highest reported BA has been 25 0 and40 0 respectively, this is similar to finding among population of close similarity.…”

“…Also Ugandan BA of 206radiographs of the lateral aspect of the foot comprising 114 males and 92 females, aged 20 to 40were studied. The findings revealed a mean BA of 35.1 o ± 7.5 o c and 37.6 o ± 5.6 o of males and females respectively.Females were reported to have a significantly higher values than males (p<0.01) 5 . Subjects from Asian population have also been studied to evaluation their BA, Saudi subjects comprising 229 lateral radiographs comprising 158 females and 71 males within the age range of 17 to 72 were studied and reported a mean BA of 31.21 o with no significant gender or age variability.…”

“…We obtain these pre-operatively to facilitate anatomic reduction of the injured side. Although Böhler's angle varies among people by more than 30° 16,17 within a person the variation is within the 5° measurement error of the angle. In addition, we are also able to compare directly the outcome of skeletally mature and immature patients who were treated using the same techniques and protocols.…”

“…The test of the ANN is performed on the test data. The results from test stage were given in Table 2 It was seen in the previous works [18] that the studies on BA is performed over different populations. Also it is noticed that an angle ranges belonging to the different populations were determined.…”
