Introduction: The Bohler’s angle(BA) is the angle between two lines tangent to the calcaneus on the lateral radiograph of an ankle. These lines are drawn tangent to the anterior and posterior aspects of the superior calcaneus.Aim: To establish base line reference data of BA required when surgical realignment of the ankle or radiological diagnosis of ankle mal alignment is required for the subject population establishing possible difference of BA among Nigerian population.Method: A total of 140 normal lateral plain radiographs of the foot and ankles, comprising of 57 male and 83 females between the ages of 10 and 60 years of age were randomly selected to establish normal BA in the study population using standard methods.Results: The mean BA reported for this study was 36.480± 4.950 with a range of 25-360 and a direct proportional relationship between BA and age of the subjects. Female subjects had a mean BA of 36.38±6.02 while their male counterpart had a BA of 36.63±8.42.Discussion: There was no significant gender difference and bilateral asymmetry in reported BA at P>0.05. The range of variation in calcaneal angle have never been reported to exceed 150, while the lowest and highest reported BA has been 250 and 400 respectively, this is similar to finding among population of close similarity.Conclusion: Borhler’s angle of Southern Nigerian do not have a significant difference from those of other Nigerian subjects.

Pediatric calcaneal fractures

Although operative treatment of displaced, intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus in adults is generally accepted as standard practice, operative treatment for the same fractures in the skeletally immature remains controversial, potentially because the outcome for fracture types (intra- vs. extra-articular) and severity (displaced vs. nondisplaced) have been confounded in studies of children. We review herein the results of 21 displaced, intra-articular fractures in 18 skeletally immature patients, who were treated with open reduction and internal fixation using a standard surgical approach and protocol developed for adults. The average pre-operative Böhler's angle on the injured side was −5° (range: −35 – +35) compared to 31° (range: +22 – +47) on the uninjured side, indicating substantial displacement. There were no post-operative infections or wound healing problems, and all but one patient was followed to union (average follow-up: 1.5 years; range: 0.30–4.3 years). Maintenance of reduction was confirmed on follow-up radiographs with an average Böhler's angle of 31° (range: +22 – +49). We demonstrate that results for operative fixation of displaced, intra-articular calcaneal fractures in the skeletally immature are comparable to those in adults when the treatment protocol is the same.

Abstract. Boehler's angle has a great importance in diagnosis and treatment of calcaneus bones fractures. In this study, Boehler's angle was estimated by using artificial neural network method. This angle was obtained from 51 well-preserved calcaneus bones which was previously measured in anatomy laboratory at Cumhuriyet University.The data values for estimation belonging to these 51 different calcaneus bones are maximum anteroposterior length, maximum height, cuboidal facet height, body height and load arm length. By using this five different parameters, ANN estimation on Boehler's angle was performed. It is clearly seen from the results that the method is capable for the estimation.
