Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy of the Middle America Trench and Slope, Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 84

Abstract: DSDP Leg 84 recovered Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous calcareous nannofossils along the landward slope of the Middle America Trench at five sites offshore of Guatemala and one site offshore of Costa Rica. At four sites, drilling reached tectonized, ophiolitic basement that underlies Pleistocene (Hole 566), upper Miocene (Hole 566C), lower Eocene (Sites 569 and 570), and possibly lower Maestrichtian/upper Campanian (Site 567-Upper Cretaceous limestone above basement may be displaced) slope sediment. Three signifi… Show more

“…Discoaster signus is characterized by thin bifurcated terminations and a prominent knob in the central area. Moshkovitz & Ehrlich (1980) and Filewicz (1985) described two species, Discoaster petaliformis and Discoaster tuberi, respectively, that Backman et al (2012) consider to be junior synonyms of D. signus. Specimens similar to D. signus were observed below and throughout the range of typical D. signus (Figs 1:6, 2).…”

“…We consider that D. signus is a valid species and that Discoaster petaliformis Moshkovitz and Ehrlich (1980) and D. tuberi (Filewicz 1985) both are junior synonyms of D. signus Bukry (1971). In Nannotax (http://nannotax.org/content/discoaster-petaliformis, December 2011), however, it is argued that "This form was independently illustrated by Filewicz (1985) as D. tuberi; Theodoridis (1984) as D. signus, and Moshkovitz & Ehrlich (1980) as D. petaliformis. The forms illustrated are of the same age (NN4-5) and extremely similar.…”
