Calculation of skid resistance from texture measurements

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThere is a wide range of routine skid resistance measurement devices on the market. All of them are measuring the friction force between a rubber wheel and the wetted road surface.Common to all of them is that they are relatively complex and costly because generally a truck carrying a large water tank is needed to wet the surface with a defined water layer.Because of the limited amount of water they can carry they are limited in range. Besides that the measurement is depending on factors like wa… Show more

“…In [2] it is remarked that while the road roughness presents little influence on the maximum friction potential in dry conditions, this changes drastically when third bodies are present on the rubber-road interface [61,64,65]. Examples include wet road surfaces, icy surfaces that melt under the application of braking force or dry particles deposited on the road surface (gravel).…”

“…The shape of microirregularities and the step-size between them are also very important parameters, meaning that the same roughness may sometimes exhibit different tribological phenomena. The shape of irregularities in the pavement surface changes in the course of the road service life (Ueckermann et al 2015;Start et al 1998). In order to study the effects of uneven adhesion properties along the road surface, a two-lane highway road is selected as a typical example of the motorway that crosses Lithuania.…”

“…Anti-skid performance of asphalt pavement relates to road surface texture directly, especially on rainy days, reasonable asphalt pavement texture can better discharge water, penetrate the water film, thereby reducing the traffic accidents due to water drift slipping. Therefore, it is of great significance to periodically monitor the surface texture of asphalt pavement during the whole life cycle and obtain the anti-skid performance of asphalt pavement in time [1,2].…”
