Calculation of Sparking Potentials of SF6 and SF6-GAS Mixtures in Uniform and Non-Uniform Electric Fields

Abstract: A simple formula is developed to predict the sparking potentials of SF6 and SF6-gas mixture in uniform and non-uniform fields. The formula has been shown to be valid over a very wide range from 1 to 1800 kPa-cm of pressure and electrode gap [1-7, 9-13, 17-19] and it would be useful to put this data in a handy form so that it can be used conveniently in practical problems of engineering interest. There is a definite indication from the published data [5][6][7] that the sparking potential of a mixture is rela… Show more

“…The measurements [1][2][3]6] indicate that the breakdown voltage of a mixture containing an electronegative gas is related to its breakdown voltage. The available data also show that any correlation between the mixture proportion and breakdown voltage obtained from measurements at a [4,7]. In the present case the measurements are available in coaxial cylinders only; U is therefore calculated from R.…”

“…Since the electric field is nonuniform, the multiplication of SF6 pressure and distance between the selected points is calculated within the range of 50 ≤ pd ≤ 1200 for the simulations. Figure 2 shows the breakdown voltages of SF6 gas with respect to the multiplication of pressure and electrode gap in kPa cm [19].…”
