Calibration of microsimulation model for tight urban diamond interchange under heterogeneous traffic

Abstract: Traffic simulation models have been widely used to evaluate design alternatives and to help decision-makers to select best design option for prevailing traffic conditions. This study focuses on application of microsimulation model to the performance assessment of Tight Urban Diamond Interchange (TUDI) located in a congested urban setting with population more than 9 million and current transport demand up to 13.5 million daily motorized trips. Geometric and operational data was collected by conducting multiple … Show more

“…The RSMPE and the GEH values for both traffic parameters are within the validation threshold of 5% and 3%, respectively; hence the base model was validated [48]. A calibrated and validated model is essential in model development to ensure a valid and reliable evaluation [56][57][58]. The calibrated and validated base case model was then expanded further to model the bus rapid transit (BRT) strategies.…”

“…e lateral displacement behaviour is widely prevalent and time discrete in the case of mixed-flow conditions, which is absent in the case of adopting the spacecontinuous car-following and lane-changing longitudinal homogeneous models [124]. A microsimulation model was developed and calibrated by Azam et al [151] using VISSIM for an urban diamond interchange consisting of heterogeneous traffic flow. e authors concluded that VISSIM could model mixed traffic stream and reflect the actual scenario.…”

“…From the perspective of Azam et al (2019), in contrast to models used by other programs, a proposed model that considers each vehicle, including its physical behavior and dynamics, in terms of acceleration or braking maneuvers, and a driver behavior model, which provides braking. , accelerating, changing lanes, etc.…”

“…And from this, a use of microsimulation raise several enlightening information. According to Azam et al (2019), understanding the nature of spatial variation behavior, in terms of time and stakeholder integeration, provides important insights that aid in the planning and management of urban traffic (people and vehicles).…”
