Callus Culture for the Production of Therapeutic Compounds

Abstract: Plant-derived compounds retain a special place in the treatment of various diseases across the world. Their application cuts across every class of disease, where they are found to be often equal or of greater potency, safer and cheaper than so-called "orthodox" medicines. These advantages have led to great interest in the use of callus culture as a biotechnological tool for the harnessing of these useful therapeutic compounds. Callus culture techniques aim to increase the yield of active constituents in cultur… Show more

“…Kultur in vitro merupakan salah satu teknik mikropropagasi yang dapat digunakan untuk budidaya secara masal dan cepat (Benjamin et al, 2019). Salah satu teknik dalam kultur in vitro yang sering digunakan untuk mikropropagasi adalah induksi kalus yang mampu menghasilkan sel-sel yang bersifat meristematik (Efferth, 2019).…”

“…To overcome this problem, callus cultures can be used for the industrial production of rare or endangered plants, as well as those that are difficult to secure because of their small size or small number [10]. Callus cultures can produce specialized metabolites at a faster Plants 2024, 13, 167 2 of 15 rate than that of traditional cultivation and are performed under controlled conditions without being affected by various environmental factors (seasonal changes, microbial diseases, pests, and geographical constraints); therefore, their functional substances are continuously produced with consistent quality [11].…”
