Can Natural Language Processing Become Natural Language Coaching?

Abstract: How we teach and learn is undergoing a revolution, due to changes in technology and connectivity. Education may be one of the best application areas for advanced NLP techniques, and NLP researchers have much to contribute to this problem, especially in the areas of learning to write, mastery learning, and peer learning. In this paper I consider what happens when we convert natural language processors into natural language coaches.

“…Chatbots are a promising tool to address this. Speech recognition and natural language processesing (NLP) advances have significantly improved chatbot technology, especially in targeted domains [20]. Chatbots can also help simulate the process of talking to another human in a more natural way than synthesized voices and potentially could offer additional benefits such as enhanced distributed cognition and social interaction abilities [35].…”

“…Researches have pointed out that supplying suggestions while writing is more helpful than suggesting after the fact (Hearst, 2015). Grammarly tries to correct grammatical errors and provides the explanation while the user is writing.…”

“…Research issues in this direction have gained more and more attention (Hearst, 2015). Examples include the workshops on Innovative Use of NLP for Building Educational Applications (BEA) since 2003 1 and the workshops on Natural Language Processing Techniques for Educational Applications (NLPTEA) since 2014 2 , where the former was held in North America mainly for English or western languages, while the latter was held in Asia mainly for Chinese or oriental languages.…”
