Abstract-Wireless community networks (CNs) are large-scale, self-organized and decentralized communication infrastructures built and operated by citizens for citizens. Community network cloud infrastructures have been recently introduced to run services inside the network, without the need to consume them from the Internet. We have developed a Linux-based distribution code-named Cloudy, which fosters the service deployment and automation in community network clouds. In this paper we present two ways provisioned by Cloudy to integrate the services and improve the users QoS in these clouds. First, we present a distributed service discovery mechanism that helps users with service quality metrics to choose the best service from a pool of instances. Second, we experiment with a live video streaming service deployed in CN environments, using more than 50 real CN nodes across Europe for the evaluation. Our analysis shows that tuning the vital parameters of this service as neighborhood peer selection strategies, and source node dispersion strategy, improves the video streaming QoS in the CNs. Our results indicate that both ways help the user to experience improved service performance. Automated service selection, needed once the number of micro service providers becomes larger, is the next step that can be built upon our results.

Abstract-Gossip-based content dissemination protocols are a scalable and cheap alternative to centralised content sharing systems. However, it is well known that these protocols suffer from rational nodes, i.e., nodes that aim at downloading the content without contributing their fair share to the system. While the problem of rational nodes that act individually has been well addressed in the literature, colluding rational nodes is still an open issue. Indeed, LiFTinG, the only existing gossip protocol addressing this issue, yields a high ratio of false positive accusations of correct nodes. In this paper, we propose AcTinG, a protocol that prevents rational collusions in gossip-based content dissemination protocols, while guaranteeing zero false positive accusations. We assess the performance of AcTinG on a testbed comprising 400 nodes running on 100 physical machines, and compare its behaviour in the presence of colluders against two state-of-the-art protocols: BAR Gossip that is the most robust protocol handling non-colluding rational nodes, and LiFTinG, the only existing gossip protocol that handles colluding nodes. The performance evaluation shows that AcTinG is able to deliver all messages despite the presence of colluders, whereas both LiFTinG and BAR Gossip suffer heavy message loss. It also shows that AcTinG is resilient to massive churn. Finally, using simulations involving up to a million nodes, we show that AcTinG exhibits similar scalability properties as standard gossip-based dissemination protocols.

With the growing maturity of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, Internet protocol television (IPTV) applications based on that gained great success commercially and have attracted more and more attentions from both industry and academia. Currently, the active measurement method based on crawler technology is the most popular and effective one to study P2P IPTV systems. Existing measurement results revealed that accuracy of captured overlay snapshots depends on the crawling speed of crawler system. In order to capture more accurate overlay snapshots of P2P IPTV system, we developed a very fast and efficient distributed crawler system using the distributed architecture and peer degree-rank mechanism. In this paper, we first introduce the architectures of PPTV channel-list resource distribution and the whole system, which is the most popular and largest instance of P2P IPTV applications nowadays. Subsequently, this paper evaluates the crawling results of two dedicated crawlers capturing from peer-list servers and ordinary peers, respectively. Finally, we propose a fast and accurate dedicated crawler system based on distributed architecture and peer degree rank for PPTV. The experiment results show that the performance of our distributed crawler system is much better than other existing crawler systems. Specifically, our distributed crawler can track a very popular channel with about 7200 online users in 30 s. It is also reasonable to believe that our distributed crawler system can capture complete overlay snapshots. To the best of our knowledge, our study work is the first to explore capturing accurate overlay snapshots of large-scale P2P IPTV applications. Our crawler system can provide a good solution for capturing more accurate overlay snapshots of PPTV system and can also be used to help researchers to design crawler systems for other P2P IPTV systems.
