Can Polyphenols be Used as Anti-Inflammatory Agents against Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2)-Induced Inflammation?

Abstract: Covid-19 is the causative agent of a beta coronavirus that causes severe inflammatory pneumonia, so excessive inflammation is considered a risk factor for the disease. In Covid-19 disease, an inflammatory response develops in the body. It has been reported as a result of various studies that this response causes damage to various organs and tissues, especially the lungs. According to reports, cytokine storms are largely responsible for death in such patients. Some of the consequences of severe inflammation and… Show more

“…Physiologically low levels of ROS play a role as an important regulator of various signal transduction pathways in folliculogenesis, oogenesis, embryogenesis, and pregnancy [5]. High levels of ROS, caused by increased production of oxidant species and/or decreased effectiveness of the antioxidant system, lead to oxidative stress [14,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. Therefore, ovarian oxidative stress models will make important contributions to the understanding of these relationships, since the relationships between oxidative stress induced by ROS and the female reproductive system are not fully understood [40].…”

“…These mechanisms are often referred to as "antioxidant defense systems" or "antioxidants". Antioxidants control the metabolism and free radical levels that occur in normal metabolic or pathological conditions and prevent or repair the damage that these radicals can cause [13][14][15].…”

“…Accumulation of ROS due to inefficient neutralization can lead to oxidative stress, resulting in cellular damage and contributing to the development of various diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. Factors contributing to oxidative stress include environmental pollutants, smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and specific medications [19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…If antioxidant defense induction is inadequate or absent, concomitant cellular and tissue damage often occurs. Some diseases can be directly caused by oxidative stress, but in most diseases, oxidative stress is a consequence and can often only be a secondary event [108][109][110]. However, it plays an important role in promoting additional tissue damage in most diseases.…”
