Cancer cell‑specific anticancer effects of Coptischinensis on gefitinib‑resistant lung cancer cells are mediated through the suppression of Mcl‑1 and Bcl‑2

Abstract: The epider mal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), gefitinib, is an effective therapeutic drug used in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs) harboring EGFR mutations. However, acquired resistance significantly limits the efficacy of EGFR-TKIs and consequently, the current chemotherapeutic strategies for NSCLCs. It is, therefore, necessary to overcome this resistance. In the present study, the anticancer potential of natural extracts of Coptis chinensis (ECC) against g… Show more

“…The EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), gefitinib, is used in the treatment of NSCLC with EGFR mutations ( Rawluk and Waller, 2018 ). C. Rhizoma extracts suppress EGFR/AKT signaling and the expression of overexpressed antiapoptotic proteins, Mcl-1 and Bcl-2 in gefitinib-resistant NSCLC cells ( Kim et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Kim et al investigated the effects of natural extracts of Coptis chinensis on gefitinib-resistant LC cells. The treatment with extracts alone and combination treatment with gefitinib enhanced the sensitivity of gefitinib-resistant cells to gefitinib in vitro, although no significant improvements were observed in vivo [95].…”

“…Experiments proved that Chinese herbal medicine and its extracts can inhibit the growth of tumor cells or prevent the occurrence and development of tumors in various ways. TCM, such as Rhizoma Dioscorea, [26] Rhizoma Arisaematis, [27] Bombyx Batryticatus, [28] Coptis Chinensis, [29] Fructus Lycii, [30,31] Cyathula Officinalis, [32] Astragalus Membranaceus, [33][34][35] Phellodenron Amurense, [36] Cornus officinalis, [37] Gastrodiiae Elata, [38] Ziziphus Jujuba, [39] Polygala Tenuifolia, [40] and Eclipta Prostrata [41] have been confirmed the effect of antitumor. Berberine, the extract of Rhizoma Coptidis, can directly induce apoptosis.…”
