Introduction: Sudan, the most diverse country in the African continent, is experiencing growing cancers problems. However, little is known about thyroid cancer epidemiology and patterns. the study aimed to analyse and describe the epidemiological characteristics and trends of thyroid cancer in, in the period1 st January 2005 and 31 st December 2015. Methods: This is retrospective population and hospital-based study. We analysed epidemiological data for digital medical records at both Radiation and Isotope Centre Khartoum (RICK), and Soba University Hospital, Khartoum, Sudan were reviewed. Results: In total, 1,062 cases were reported during 1st January 2005 and 31 st December 2015. Of these, (360; 33.9%) were male and (702; 66.1%) were female. The highest number of cases was in the 25-54-yearold age group (451; 42.5%), and more than 65-year-old age (331; 31.2%). The most predominant type of thyroid cancer among the Sudanese population was Papillary carcinoma (734; 69.1%) followed by Follicular carcinoma 178(16.8%) and Medullary carcinoma (150; 14.1%). There were significant differences in gender, age groups and types of thyroid cancer (P=0.001). Based on geographical distribution thyroid cancer showed high prevalence in Khartoum, North Kurdufan, River Nile, Kassala, North Darfur, Northern, and south Kurdufan. Whereas, low distribution is seen in Red sea, West Darfur, West Kurdufan, East Darfur, Al Gadarif, and the Blue Nile. Conclusion: our results suggest that thyroid cancer continuous presenting alarming challenge with an increasing the prevalence in females.Papillary carcinoma is the most common type among Sudanese populations. Further epidemiological studies are required in policy strategies for control and prevention strategies of thyroid cancer in Sudan.

Background and summaryThousands of workers are engaged in textile industry worldwide. Textile industry involves the use of different kinds of dyes which are known to possess carcinogenic properties. Solvents used in these industries are also associated with different health related hazards including cancer. In previous studies on textile and iron industries, the authors have reported genotoxicity among them and observed occurrence of cancer deaths among textile industry workers. Thus, an attempt has been made to compile the studies on the prevalence of different types of cancers among textile industry workers.Literature searchA wide literature search has been done for compiling the present paper. Papers on cancer occurrence among textile industry workers have been taken from 1976 to 2015. A variety of textile dyes and solvents, many of them being carcinogenic, are being used worldwide in the textile industry. The textile industry workers are therefore, in continuous exposure to these dyes, solvents, fibre dusts and various other toxic chemicals. The present study evaluates the potential of different chemicals and physical factors to be carcinogenic agents among occupationally exposed workers by going through various available reports and researches. Papers were collected using different databases and a number of studies report the association of textile industry and different types of cancer including lung, bladder, colorectal and breast cancer. After going through the available reports, it can be concluded that workers under varied job categories in textile industries are at a higher risk of developing cancer as various chemicals used in the textile industry are toxic and can act as potential health risk in inducing cancer among them. Assessing the cancer risk at different job levels in textile industries may be found useful in assessing the overall risk to the workers and formulating the future cancer preventive strategies.

Daugiamečiai natūralaus imuniteto endotoksinui tyrimai, pradedant nuo 1970 m., atlikti Vilniaus universiteto Onkologijos instituto Profilaktinės imunologijos laboratorijoje, parodė, kad natūralaus imuniteto funkcijos tiek imunostimuliuotų, tiek imunosupresuotų organizmų yra glaudžiai susijusios su specifiniais IgM klasės natūraliais antikūnais (IgMNA) enterobakteriniam bendram antigenui (EBA), esančiam žarninės grupės mikroorganizmų išorinėje membranoje, t. y. endogeniniai ar spontaniniai antikūnai gram-neigiamos bakterijos Alcaligenes faecalis 415 lipopolysacharido molekulėms, vadinamoms endotoksinu (IgMNAE). Šie duomenys, remiantis mūsų anksčiau sukurtos vėžio kilmės rezistentiškumo teorijos biologiniais dėsniais (rezistentiškumas ir atavizmas), leido pasiūlyti bendrą hipotezę apie "snaudžiančio" atavistinio endotoksino galimą aktyvaciją ir svarų vaidmenį vėžio patologijoje navikinėms ląstelėms tampant savarankiška parazitine populiacija. Hipotezės išvados buvo ekstrapoliuotos į žmogaus vėžio profilaktiką. 1979 ir 1982 m. tirtų 2 223 sveikų žmonių (kraujo donorų ir ne donorų) kraujo serumo IgMNAE duomenys, nustatyti precipitacijos reakcijos agaro gelyje ir autoimunografijos metodais, buvo įvertinti vėžio ligotumo atžvilgiu. Turėję IgMNAE žmonės po 15-30 metų susirgo onkologinėmis ligomis atitinkamai procentine išraiška 1/3 mažiau (5 proc.) negu jų neturėję (p < 0,05). Gauti duomenys leidžia apibendrinti, kad natūralaus imuniteto endotoksinui mechanizme galima įžvelgti organizmo homeostazės apsauginę reakciją. IgMNAE aukštas lygis pagal paveldo programą turėtų stabdyti kancerogenais pažeistų ląstelių evoliucijos eigoje "paslėpto" ląstelės gelmėse ir kancerogenezės procese "atgyjančio" parazitizmo nešėjo atavistinio endotoksino veikos suaktyvėjimą, būtiną vėžinių ląstelių išgyvenimui ir metastazavimui, bet antagonistišką sveikoms kūno ląstelėms. Todėl natūralaus imuniteto endotoksinui stimuliacija pagamintomis vakcinomis prieš atavistinį endotoksiną gali būti naudinga vėžio prevencijoje žmonėms su žemu natūralaus imuniteto lygmeniu ir taip pat kuriant imunoterapinius metodus, siekiant sustabdyti navikinių ląstelių endogeninį parazitizmą. abstract Key words: cancer, endotoxin, immunity, prophylaxis, conception.
