Capacity and Efficiency Improvement of Mimo Antenna Systems for 5g Handheld Terminals

Abstract: The efficacy of including a defected ground structure (DGS) for mobile communication on a mobile phone PCB in improving the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system performance is evaluated and demonstrated in the context of single and multiple-element two-port planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs). The proposed scheme designed and developed for operation in the 3.5 GHz long term evolution (LTE) and future 5G frequency bands demonstrates efficiency improvement by 15% and capacity improvement by around 7% beca… Show more

“…The performance of the proposed four‐slot frequency reconfigurable antenna was evaluated in a MIMO configuration. To facilitate that the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) data 27 were calculated using the radiation patterns for the four varactor capacitance values. ECC results shown in Figure 13 illustrate that ECC <0.05 over the frequency band of 5.1–6 GHz.…”

“…The cumulative density function (CDF) and the ergodic MIMO capacity (bps/Hz) were also computed using formulations available in Reference 27 with the results being shown in Figure 14. For comparison, the CDF corresponding to the reference Rayleigh distribution and single‐input single‐output (SISO) case is also plotted.…”

“…Planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is a popular antenna used for ultrawideband and mobile-phone due to its compact size, light weight, and low cost [9][10][11][12]. However, the substrate of the above-mentioned antenna may not be compatible with the system board.…”
