Capacity Mapping for Optimum Utilization of Pulverizers for Coal Fired Boilers

Abstract: The pulverizer plays a pivotal role in coal based thermal power generation. The improper coal fineness or drying reflects a quality-wise deterioration. This results in flame instability, unburnt combustible loss, and a propensity to slagging or clinker formation. Simultaneously, an improper air-coal ratio may result in either the coal pipe choke or the flame impingement, an unbalanced heat release, an excessive FEGT, overheating of the tube metal, etc, resulting on the reduced output and excessive pulverizer r… Show more

“…Also, the techniques for monitoring the operation of the mills such as automation of classifier adjustments, advanced coal sampling equipments, and vibration analysis for diagnosing problems are detailed. Chittatosh Bhattacharya [109] emphasized the need of capacity mapping for mills, in order to avoid overcapacity or under capacity running of the milling system. A numerical algorithm is developed to find the optimum available capacity at a particular input/output condition.…”

“…Some studies on optimizing the mill operation are also conducted in [105][106][107][108][109] by making adjustments in the major control loops of the milling system. I. Arauzo et al [105] and H. Wang et al [106] aimed at optimizing the operational point of the mill by minimizing the energy consumption.…”

“…The mass conservation equation in coal mills is expressed as follows [24,25]: (1) where M stands for the mass of coal stored in the coal mill, t is the time, Bj is the mass flow rate of the coal into the mill. So is the mass flow rate of the pulverized coal out of the mill; Bf is the coal combustion rate when the mill buming happens.…”
