“…Simple mixtures of sulfonated porphyrins can be separated as a function of charge by capillary electrophoresis [36][37][38]. The sulfonated naphthyl porphyrins are mixtures of numerous compounds, however, making separation more difficult.…”

“…We used the 5-(p-aminophenyl)-10,15,20-tris(p-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin, 4, which is water-soluble (due to the three sulfonic groups), and contains a reactive amino group that undergoes a rapid diazotization in the presence of nitrite and may act as an anionic carrier. We have recently reported on the beneficial effect of b-cyclodextrin and its O-methylated derivatives on the concentration zone electrophoresis separation of anionic porphyrins such as meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin, meso-tetrakis-(4-sulfonatophenyl) and their zinc(II) and copper(II) complexes [18]. Cyclodextrains (CDs) are water-soluble, naturally occurring cyclic oligosaccharides containing 6±8 D-glucose units arranged in such a way as to create a fairly rigid apolar cavity.…”

“…Based on our previous results on CE of porphyrins [18], the BGE of choice was a 20 mM phosphate buffer at pH 7.0. Under neutral conditions the three porphyrins 4, 5, and 6 possess total charge of ±3 (neither the pyrrolic nitrogens of the porphyrin core nor the amino group are protonated in neutral solution), ±2 and ±3, respectively.…”
